After a controversial moderation decision to remove a User who posted they wished the CEO of the Social Media Platform tumblr "die[d] a forever death involving a car covered in hammers that explodes more than a few times and hammers go flying everywhere", a post by many to be understood to be satirical, and a badly received statement of the CEO, many users of the platform migrated to the fediverse. -

queer.af seized by Taliban
February 2024
The Mastodon instance queer.af disappeared after the Taliban have shut down the Domain. Alongside it other .af domains were affected. The Administrators already set out to not renew the Domain on April that year but were taken by surprise. Many fedi instances added a manual DNS entry to their instances' servers to allow users to migrate their accounts. -

The Instance had to be discontinued because the Owner, with their move away from Japan, stopped being qualified to hold a .jp Domain, as only individuals with a physical address in the Country are allowed to own one. -

FBI seizes kolektiva.social server

During a raid on the home of the Admin of kolektiva.social, the server running the Instance is seized by the FBI. The data on it was not encrypted, so this event sparked a debate about data security on fediverse software. -

The ActivityPub Protocol is published as a recommendation to the Social Web Working Group by the World Wide Web Consortium. The standard was already in use by Instance technology like Mastodon but many view this as the Birthday of the AP protocol. -

First Sketch of the ActivityPump protocol

The 5th September 2014 was the day the first sketch of the ActivityPump protocol was pushed onto GitHub. It would later be refined into a draft that would be submitted to the Social Web Working Group and go on to become the foundation of the ActivityPub protocol. Many view this as the Birtday of the AP protocol.
